The United National Movement (UNM) members, Georgia's main opposition party, asked for internal elections. Several regional party officials urged elections at all party levels at a news conference on November 9. While the speakers refrained from explicitly mentioning Nika Melia, the party's current chair, they said that elections for the position would be most important.

Nika Melia, the head of the National Movement, declared at the briefing on November 9 that he was prepared for these elections to take place anywhere and whenever he pleased. "Everyone should be aware that I was, am, and will be prepared to participate in any kind of election, particularly in internal party elections, especially when I have a lot to say," he added. 

Regarding the call for intra-party elections, Melia said nothing new was discussed. The party's chairman commented on the format of his fellows' statement and predicted that the upcoming period would undoubtedly disclose the actual cause and purpose of addressing this problem so abruptly. "The immediate future will undoubtedly reveal the true motivations behind bringing up this matter in such a hurry, especially because the European Parliament's most significant assessments ought to have been the major topic of discussion today," he added.

"I brought up the subject of party elections in the context of these conversations a month and a half ago; I did so on my initiative and in the presence of people who are now calling for elections. Elections were a topic on which everyone could agree; the only issues up for debate were the dates and procedures. Elections are something I can deal with if there are any. I want everyone to know that I was, am, and will be ready to participate in any type of election, especially internal party elections, especially when I have a lot to say," Melia concluded.
