South Caucasus countries in World Banks Human Capital Index

On 16 September, the World Bank Group published their updated Human Capital Index for the year 2020. The Index included health and education data for 174 countries – covering 98% of the world’s population – up to March 2020, providing a pre-pandemic baseline on the health and education of children.

On 16 September, protests were held in solidarity with the Azerbaijani opposition politician Tofiq Yagublu. The protests were held in Toronto, Istanbul,  Berlin and Strasbourg, as well as in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku.

Azerbaijan blocks the flight of Russian military aircraft 

The Azerbaijani military forced the Russian military aircraft  to turn around in the sky over the Caspian Sea, blocking the flight across its border. The above mentioned actions happened at the same time when Armenia and Russia conducted joint military exercises involving more than 1500 personnel.

US State Department on the investment climate in Azerbaijan

In its report on Azerbaijan, the State Department noted that the country’s government had in recent years undertaken a set of measures to improve the business climate in the country, but obstacles still remain such as structural reforms to diversify Azerbaijan’s economy and judicial issues related to US enterprises and corruption.

“Caucasus Watch” is seeking local specialists from Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the North Caucasus region, to assist our research endeavours and help enrich our content.

“Caucasus Watch” is an independent platform, which provides coverage of recent developments in various locations of the Caucasus region for the German and overall European stakeholders. We are an international team of Caucasus enthusiasts and are currently looking for local contributors who focus on social, economic, political and security dynamics of the said region.

The platform offers: I) a flexible format of cooperation, as well as competitive remuneration; II) access to English and German speaking readership in the wider European region; III) an opportunity to join the network of regional specialists through the initiatives and events to be organized by the Caucasus Watch and partner institutions.
