Armenian Court Seizes 47 Million Euros of Former Syunik Governor

Surik Khachatryan, the former governor of Syunik (southernmost province of Armenia), and others associated with him have been ordered to forfeit property and other assets valued at 47.5 million euros.

Property owned by Khachatryan, his wife, his two kids, and two other relatives was seized. The assets were frozen by the court in February, allowing Khachatryan and his family time to explain how they were acquired reasonably.

These assets include real estate valued at over 3.8 million euros, including homes in Yerevan and Goris, land, automobiles, and 25 million euros in offshore investments. The investigation centers on accusations that Khachatryan gave the go-ahead for a fake land transfer to one of his friends to prevent others with whom he had some disagreements from starting enterprises nearby.
