Georgian CSOs Calls Court to Release Former Head of State Security Service

On July 29, civil society organisations released a statement responding to the arrest of Ioseb (Soso) Gogashvili, the former Deputy Head of the State Security Service of Georgia (SSS), and reminded authorities that they have a special obligation to administer a high standard of justice in the case against him.

Eleven civil society organizations, including the Georgian Young Lawyers' Association, the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, and the Democratic Initiative of Georgia, have signed the joint statement. In their joint statement, the CSOs highlighted that Gogashvili's rights and safety are crucial, despite the fact that he has been linked to several systemic crimes in the past and is accused of severe abuses of citizens' rights. Based on the materials released by Gogashvili, the report prepared by CSOs, and the accusations voiced by him against Bidzina Ivanishvili, the CSOs called on the Ministry of Justice to take full responsibility for protecting his life and physical safety.

Additionally, they appealed to the Court to execute justice against Gogashvili in such a way that there are no questions about the independence and impartiality of the judiciary. Gogashvili, who was detained on July 16, made a statement on July 26 accusing Bidzina Ivanishvili's involvement in the 2017 attack on ex-Deputy Interior Minister Gela Khvedelidze.
