"The countries of the collective West continue to exhibit the cynicism of their double-standards strategy, which they have pursued for decades." This was said by the de-facto Foreign Ministry of Abkhazia in response to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's statement that Serbia would not join the EU unless Kosovo's independence was recognised. Abkhaz officials suggest that the German chancellor pay attention to Georgia, which has also applied for EU membership, and impose similar restrictions on it. Georgia cannot seek EU membership until the independence of the Republic of Abkhazia is recognised.
Earlier, the European Parliament passed a statement by the leaders of parliamentary parties asking for Ukraine and Moldova to be granted candidate status for EU membership, but Georgia was simply encouraged to continue working towards attaining candidate status.
"We, the leaders of the political groups of the European Parliament, urge the heads of state and government to decide on the EU membership applications of Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia at their June 23–24 meeting." "We strongly urge that Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova be granted candidate status in the EU in accordance with article 49 of the EU Treaty as a merit-based commencement to the process, and we will work towards granting the same status to Georgia in order to fulfil the legitimate aspirations of the Georgian people," the statement says.
