The European Union is ready to step up support for measures aimed at establishing peace in the South Caucasus, according to an interview by EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Toivo Klaar on 26 May. 

He noted that after the May 22nd meeting of the leaders of Azerbaijan, Armenia and the Council of Europe in Brussels, much work remains to be done before the leaders meet again for another trilateral meeting this summer. "As for the future peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the leaders instructed their teams to continue discussions and ensure progress in the coming weeks, the EU Special Representative said," he added. "The Special Representative emphasised that the EU welcomes all efforts aimed at establishing long-term sustainable peace in the region, noting that in addition to the Brussels format, there are other parties that are helping to find a comprehensive solution," Klaar underlined. “We all proceed from the conditions established with the mediation of Russia in the ceasefire statement of November 9th, 2020. The high-level agreements reached in Moscow and Sochi are in the same direction as we are. Our efforts are not mutually exclusive, but quite the opposite,” he said. It is also important, he said, to prepare the population for a long-term sustainable peace and ensure that conditions are met for the return of all displaced persons.
