Armenia's Ambassador at Large, Edmon Marukyan, has issued Yerevan's response to Azerbaijan's five-point plan for normalising bilateral ties.
In mid-March, Azerbaijan released the contents of its one-page proposal on normalising relations with Armenia, which includes five principles such as "mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity, inviolability of international borders, and political independence of each other." In response, Armenia sent its own proposal, which included six clauses.
In its reaction, Yerevan stated that the Republic of Armenia has never had and would never have territorial claims against Azerbaijan.
According to Marukyan, Yerevan's statement says, "the protection of the security of the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, the respect for their rights and freedoms, as well as the resolution of the ultimate status of Nagorno-Karabakh are vital for the Armenian side."
"The Armenian side takes into account the pledges made by the President of Azerbaijan, Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, and President of the Russian Federation on November 9th, 2020, January 11th, and November 26th, 2021," he said. "The Armenian side is prepared to begin peace talks and normalisation of ties between Azerbaijan and Armenia in order to create interstate relations based on the UN Charter and other international agreements. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group were urged by Armenia to organise discussions."
Marukyan also disclosed that during a meeting with President of the European Council Charles Michel on April 6 in Brussels, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev agreed to begin peace talks based on Baku's five and Yerevan's six points.
