Erdoğan met with Aliyev to discuss Ukraine conflict

On 10 March, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, on regional developments and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

They noted that by signing the Shusha Declaration and having it ratified in both countries' parliaments, the fraternal and cordial ties between Azerbaijan and Turkey have progressed further on the foundation of alliance. The two parties discussed the potential for normalisation of Azerbaijani-Armenian relations in the post-conflict period. The presidents also discussed the significance of the Zangezur Corridor's opening, the opportunities it provided for the area, and the Kars-Nakhchivan railway's development in this respect.

The sides emphasised the necessity of Armenia implementing all of the conditions of the Trilateral Declaration made on November 10, 2020, and the interactions between Turkish and Armenian delegates during the meeting.

The conference also discussed Azerbaijan-Turkey energy cooperation, the smooth functioning of the Southern Gas Corridor, the possibilities of boosting gas supplies to the neighbouring nation and Europe via Turkey, and the building of the Igdir-Nakhchivan gas pipeline. It was highlighted that investments were planned for this purpose in Azerbaijan's governmental budget.

During the conversation, the two sides discussed how to expand economic and commercial cooperation further.

They stated that military and military-technical cooperation, including military training and education, was continuing satisfactorily. Other subjects of mutual interest were also discussed.

The presidents discussed the current situation in Ukraine and applauded Turkey and Azerbaijan's efforts, as well as President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan 's personal efforts, to bring the war to a close as soon as possible.

The expansion of Azerbaijan-Turkey allied relations was lauded by both parties. President Ilham Aliyev has invited Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey to visit Azerbaijan.

Aliyev was in Turkey on a one-day working visit when he landed in Ankara. Aliyev was met at the Esenboğa Airport by a group led by Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Dönmez.

Aliyev and Erdoğan have previously stated their commitment to working together on bilateral and regional problems.
