The construction of a road from Armenia to Iran, an alternative to the Goris-Kapan highway, is one of the most important tasks of the Armenian government. This, as reported by the press service of the government, was announced at a meeting on the North-South transport corridor by the Deputy Prime Minister of Armenia, Ambartsum Matevosyan.
According to the press service, government officials at the meeting discussed the construction of a section of the Sisian-Kajaran road.
“The implementation of the program will increase interest in transit through Armenia, ensure the security of the southern regions of the country, contribute to their economic development and improve the living standards of the population,” Matevosyan said.
It is reported that the meeting participants also discussed issues related to the implementation of tenders for construction.
Recall that the section of the Goris-Kapan highway in the Syunik region of Armenia was taken under the control of units of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces. They set up customs checkpoints and demand tolls. Trucks from Iran were constantly passing along this road. To bypass the occupied section, the Armenian authorities are reconstructing an alternative route.
