The construction of an alternative road to the interstate highway Goris-Kapan in the Syunik region of Armenia will be completed and usable starting early next yest. The statement came from Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Suren Papikyan on his Facebook account.
The 21-kilometre section of the Goris-Kapan Road passes through the territory of Azerbaijan, and official Yerevan has recently begun construction of an alternative to Goris-Kapan.
Suren Papikyan and Armenian officials visited the 43-kilometre Tatev-Agvani section of the road, which is being repaired. This part of the road will be commissioned by the end of November.
The new road is an alternative to the Goris-Kapan Road, the main route between Iran and Armenia.
After Azerbaijan took control of the part of the Goris-Kapan Road passing through its territory in September this year, it started inspecting trucks with Iranian license plates coming and going from Iran to Armenia and imposed customs duties. This caused dissatisfaction among Iranian drivers due to rising costs.
Iran has said it will support Armenia in building an alternative road to Goris-Kapan.
