Armenia asked the UN International Court of Justice to oblige the Azerbaijani authorities "to stop the torture and killings of Armenian prisoners" and provide compensation for human rights violations.

The complaint says that for decades Azerbaijan has been subjecting Armenia to racial discrimination, which was expressed, among other things, in the massacres and torture of prisoners, said a message published on September 16 on the website of the International Court of Justice.

"These violations [occurred] against ethnic Armenians, regardless of their citizenship. And in September 2020, this manifested itself in the aggression of Azerbaijan against the unrecognised Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia. Even after the end of hostilities, after the ceasefire, the agreement of which came into force 10 November 2020, Azerbaijan continues to kill and violence against Armenian captives, hostages, and other detainees," the Armenian statement said.

Armenia’s efforts to put an end to Azerbaijan’s actions have not been crowned with success. Therefore, Armenia asked the UN International Court of Justice to bring Azerbaijan to justice for the acts committed in order to prevent such things in the future, and also demands compensation for the violations committed, the message says.

The UN International Court announced that it accepted Armenia's appeal for consideration.

It should be mentioned that the relatives of the Armenian detainees have repeatedly held protest actions. On August 9, they held a rally near the government building in Yerevan and threatened to continue it until officials gave them concrete answers about the prisoners’ situations. The protesters dispersed after speaking with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's press secretary.

Azerbaijan admits that it is holding 45 Armenian citizens, while the Armenian side has collected data on 280 prisoners, said human rights activist Artak Zeynalyan.
