Armenian Foreign Minister met with Russian counterpart

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan met with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. The sides exchanged views on bilateral cooperation, political processes in the region and the implementation of the trilateral statement.

Mirzoyan said that Azerbaijan committed provocations in Nagorno-Karabakh and that such actions contradicted the provisions of the tripartite statement. He also spoke about relations with Russia. "Russia is a military-political ally of Armenia. It is no coincidence that I am making my first visit as foreign minister to Russia," he said.

Lavrov recalled that Yerevan and Moscow cooperate in various fields and said his country was interested in developing relations with Armenia.

The Russian Foreign Minister also touched upon the issue of "prisoners of war". According to him, "the statement signed by the leaders of the three countries on November 9, 2020 was about the release of prisoners of war at that time." Armenian servicemen currently in Azerbaijan were detained in late November after the November 9 statement. Mirzoyan also spoke about peace talks with Azerbaijan and said that no talks were held at this stage: "The status of Nagorno-Karabakh should be resolved with the participation of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs."
