Azerbaijani soldier detained in Nagorno-Karabakh

On the evening of August 25, the de facto authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh reported that an Azerbaijani soldier was detained in the town of Martakert. The soldier had entered one of the Armenian-inhabited houses there. Shortly afterwards, he was arrested by local security authorities. It was later announced that the Azerbaijani had been in the town for two days, staying in empty houses until he was discovered by local residents.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry confirmed the incident. An Azerbaijani soldier who was being treated at the psychiatric institution of the Gandja military hospital left the hospital without permission and then traveled to Nagorno-Karabakh, the official statement said. In Nagorno-Karabakh, the soldier had entered the territory for which Russian peacekeepers were responsible. Investigations have been launched in Azerbaijan against the soldier, who violated service regulations, it said. Baku was in contact with Russia regarding the situation.
