Azerbaijani peacekeepers will remain in Kabul after the Taliban takeover of the Afghan capital. There, together with the Turkish contingent, they are monitoring the Kabul airport, which is currently playing a key role in the evacuation of foreign troops and their local aid workers, diplomats as well as Afghan government officials.
There is no published information on when the 120 Azerbaijani troops would be withdrawn from Afghanistan. This decision is apparently to be made in close consultation with Turkey.
The number of Azerbaijani peacekeepers serving in the Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan was increased from 94 to 120 on January 9, 2018, in accordance with the amendment of the resolution "On Approving the Deployment of a Platoon of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Azerbaijan as Part of the Battalion of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Turkey and under the General Command of NATO Structures and Participation in the Corresponding Operations in Afghanistan" passed by the Azerbaijani Parliament on December 29, 2017.
